Partnerships

In 2018, with our dedication to encouraging education across the world, Build It Together began a partnership with an organization called Deaf Open World.
About Deaf Open World:
Deaf Open World was founded in 2016 as a small team of devoted individuals interested in changing the current landscape of deaf education in Swaziland.
Our primary focus is supporting Deaf Swazi youth and their parents in accessing educational opportunities. Through our initiatives, we hope to foster independence and cultivate positive self-images among the youth we work with, while also strengthening the communities that support the deaf youth and their families.  We strive for more Deaf youth to acquire higher education and training needed to enter the workforce and find meaningful jobs that match their interests.
We also advocate and invest in deaf education directly. We promote a bilingual approach to Deaf Education, where Sign Language is the primary mode of instruction for Deaf youth. We seek to encourage the use of Swazi Sign Language in all educational institutions that include deaf students.

Key Highlights:
In 2016 :
We enrolled our first six students at De La Bat School in Western Cape, South Africa, where they began their high school education.
In 2017:
We were able to support four more students on their journey to receive a high school education. We also enrolled one student at Gallaudet University’s English Language Institute in Washington, DC, USA where that same student is now into her third semester at the school.
All of the students supported through Deaf Open World hope to complete their current high school programs and advance to university, where they would be among the first Deaf individuals in Swaziland to not only obtain a high school diploma but also achieve their Bachelor’s degrees. The students have hopes of becoming teachers, nurses, and social workers and return to Swaziland, where they can serve as role models to support other Deaf Swazi youth in reaching their potential.

Deaf Open World is on our way to becoming a registered 501(c)3. We are enjoying the growing partnership we have with Build It Together Foundation.
